Built in 1979 by Stephen McAllister and Brent Watson (Yale Bright Star Catalogue) in Salt Lake City.

A laboratory prototype of Digistar was used to generate the star fields in the science fiction film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Filming was done directly from the Digistar display in the lab from November 1982 to February 1983 (Wikipedia).
